Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield is a consolidation of two Indiana-based mutual insurance companies (Blue Cross of Indiana formed in 1944; Blue Shield of Indiana formed in 1946). Through a steady series of mergers and acquisitions, Anthem began its expansion program across multiple states.
