Blue Cross Blue Shield (BCBS) is a group of nationwide licensees operating in all fifty states, Puerto Rico, and the District of Columbia. The “Blue System” began as two separate organizations. Blue Cross was formed to provide hospitalization for Texas educators while Blue Shield was established in the Pacific Northwest to give lumber and mine workers access to physician care. Today, it is collectively known as the Blue Cross Blue Shield Association. As the nation’s oldest and largest provider, BCBS continues to provide affordable healthcare coverage and is an advocate for innovative preventive programs.

Each licensee within the BCBS network operates individually, and all are locally owned and operated. With a focus on community involvement and regional needs, licensees are able to provide superior resources for members through the strength of the association. Plans are available to corporations, small businesses, and individuals. Offerings and application requirements may vary regionally. Members can choose among several options:

• Health Maintenance Organizations (HMO)
• Point of Service plans (POS)
• Fee for Service plans
• Preferred Provider Organizations(PPO).

Employer-funded plans include:

• Health Reimbursement Accounts (HRA)
• Flexible Spending Accounts (FSA)
• Health Savings Accounts (HSA).

All Blue Cross Blue Shield licensees offer Medicare options for individuals aged 65-plus. Each of these plans provides flexible choices at varying pricing levels to meet most budgets and lifestyle needs.

The BCBS extended menu includes dental plans that can be applied as riders or be purchased by individuals who are covered by other carriers. Through "LifeEssentials," policies provide coverage for Loss of Sight and Accidental Death and Dismemberment. Some employers may also offer Disability and Long-Term Care policies.

Travelers and expatriates can take advantage of worldwide health coverage through the "BlueCard" program. Internationally, a network of physicians and hospitals in more than 200 countries and territories are approved to provide care.
