Group Health Cooperative
Group Health Cooperative is a non-profit health care system providing both medical care and insurance coverage. It was founded in 1947 by a community coalition that sought to ensure high quality, affordable health care. Today it provides coverage and care for more than 540,000 patients in the states of Washington and Idaho.
Group Health is one of the few consumer-operated health care organizations in the country. The company's board of trustees is elected by the Cooperative as a whole and works hard to ensure that the company places the needs of its patients first. All Group Health members over the age of 18 may register to become voting members and participate in board elections and voting on bylaws. Group Health's CEO, medical director, and other managing professionals are selected and hired by the Board.
In addition to providing unusually patient-centered medical coverage and care, Group Health is closely involved in the communities it works in, operating a number of programs designed to provide health education, improve access to health care, and similar goals. Recently, Group Health has begun the Cycling for Health program, which offers health benefits to cyclists, sponsors cycling events ranging from professional-level races to family rides, and provides safe cycling education in an effort to promote active lifestyles.
Group Health Cooperative offers a variety of insurance options for its members. A single series of individual and family plans offers deductibles ranging from $500 to $5000 and includes preventative care and varying degrees of prescription drug coverage. Optional dental plans are also available.
Group Health also offers Health Savings Account (HSA) plans, which combine high deductible insurance plans with tax-advantaged savings accounts. Group Health offers a range of group plans for small and large businesses alike. With its unusually patient-centered approach to health care and coverage, socially responsible outreach and education programs, and long history of financial stability and strength, Group Health is a wonderful option for residents of Washington and Idaho.
