Temporary Health Insurance Plan
Temporary health insurance, also known as short-term insurance, provides low-cost coverage for some unanticipated medical conditions. It’s an ideal solution if you’re between jobs, waiting for group coverage to start on your new job, if you’re a temporary or seasonal employee, or if you’re soon to be between jobs but COBRA is too expensive for your budget. It also applies to recent college graduates no longer under their parents’ policies, people who have just retired from the military, or people who are under age 65 and retired early but don’t yet qualify for Medicare.
Part of the reason temporary health insurance is low cost is because it does not cover pre-existing medical conditions (usually 36 months prior to the start of coverage), pregnancy, childbirth, immunizations, or preventative care and routine doctor visits.
It's a temporary solution designed for healthy people who are in a state of transition from a prior insurance plan. Temporary health insurance does not provide comprehensive coverage but, rather, is meant to protect your financial situation if you have an unexpected illness or accident while covered.
Coverage can be purchased for a few days, a month, or up to six months (although a few companies offer policies for 12 months). At the expiration of the term of your temporary health insurance policy, if you are still in a state of transition, you can purchase additional days of coverage. However, be aware that any medical conditions treated under the previous term will now be considered pre-existing and won't be covered in the extended term. Thus, it may be prudent to purchase a policy term from the outset that will cover your needs beyond what you initially anticipate as the period of transition.
Choosing an insurance carrier for temporary health insurance is a simple process on our site. As most companies offering temporary health insurance plans offer instant online approval with next-day coverage, you're just a step away from protecting yourself.
